Understanding the Behaviour of Mitochondria - Martin Picard #565
Martin Picard, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Medicine in Psychiatry and Neurology at Columbia University. For over a decade, Martin has been studying mitochondria and has worked closely with leading experts in the field of mitochondrial research. In 2015, he joined the faculty at Columbia University where he established the Mitochondrial Signaling Laboratory. He’s currently investigating mechanisms of mind-body interactions, specifically regarding novel principles that underlie mitochondrial responses to stressors, the maintenance of human health, and the influence of mitochondrial defects on complex cellular and physiological processes including aging. In this episode, we talk about the exciting research happening in his lab and what mitochondria tell us about our health. Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself | Dr. Lissa Rankin | Talks at Google
While some mind-body medicine pioneers and New Age teachers talk about how we can heal ourselves, Dr. Lissa Rankin was a skeptical physician, trained in evidence-based academic medicine and raised by a closed-minded physician father. But after witnessing patients who declined conventional medical treatment, only to experience spontaneous remissions from seemingly ""incurable"" illnesses, she couldn't deny the possibility that patients might hold within them the power to heal themselves. Her curiosity led her to dig deep into the medical literature to scientifically prove that the mind can heal the body. Her search uncovered not only proof that you can heal yourself, but also the shocking physiological mechanisms of how emotions like fear, loneliness, pessimism, and depression can make the body sick, while love, intimate connection, optimism, and faith can cure you. About Dr. Rankin Lissa Rankin, M.D. is a physician whose research led her to discover that our bodies have natural self-repair mechanisms that can be activated or disabled based on thoughts, beliefs, and feelings that originate in the mind. She is on a mission to heal our broken health care system, help patients play a more active role in healing themselves, heal, train and certify physicians in a more enlightened way of practicing medicine, and encourage the health care industry to embrace and facilitate, rather than resist, the body's self-healing capacities. Lissa has written 3 books, including her newest book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself. She speaks around the world, blogs at LissaRankin.com, paints professionally, and founded the Whole Health Medicine Institute, a training program for health care providers. She leads a mentoring program for visionaries, founded the wellness communities HealHealthCareNow.com and OwningPink.com, and teaches online programs, such as ""Find Your Calling"" with Dr. Martha Beck and Amy Ahlers, and ""Visionary Ignition Switch,"" an online business school for visionaries co-created with Amy Ahlers. Her work has been featured extensively in the national media, including O magazine, The New York Times, CNN, Health, Women's Health, Self, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. You can follow her on Twitter at @lissarankin or at Facebook.com/LissaRankin. Lissa lives in Marin County, California with her husband and daughter.

Miracles in Medicine? The Science of Spontaneous Remission with Dr Jeffrey Rediger
In today's podcast myself and my guest Dr Jeffrey Rediger talk about spontaneous remissions or ‘medical miracles’ that he has been studying for over 15 years. Conventionally ignored by the scientific literature as outliers, anomalies or likely a result of misdiagnosis, Dr Jeffrey decided to dedicate a large part of his career studying these cases in the hope of trying to find out if there is anything we could learn from them. What he revealed is a fascinating collections of stories that has changed his thinking on medicine and how we practice. It could be the revolution in medicine many patients and doctors are crying out for. Rather than adding legitimacy to those trying to exploit people's hope and belief, Dr Jeffrey sees a new way of examining unusual cases of remission through the lens of science. Dr Jeffrey Rediger is an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Medical Director for the McLean SouthEast Adult Psychiatric Programs. He has a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and publishes in the fields of medicine, psychiatry and spirituality. He has an Amish background. Cured is his first book. Our conversation includes discussing: The placebo effect How belief plays into remission Putting the body into a “Healing Mode” Why love, compassion and kindness are key to health and longevity Negativity bias The accidents of biology and how they lead to the secrets of health Flexing your Vagus Nerve The 4 pillars of healing - Immunity, Stress, Identity, Nutrition Follow Dr Jeff: Twitter: @jeffrey_rediger Facebook: www.facebook.com/drjeffreyrediger/ Instagram: @drjeffreyrediger Website: drjeffreyrediger.com And be sure to check out his TED Talk: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mjVHIB0FhI and his recent book Cured: www.penguin.co.uk/authors/133175/jeff-rediger.html Follow Me here: Website: www.thedoctorskitchen.com PODCAST: https://thedoctorskitchen.com/podcasts Order my NEW Cookbook "Eat to Beat Illness" : https://amzn.to/2NTeRt8 Order my FIRST Cookbook "The Doctor's Kitchen" : http://amzn.to/2hvTCTG Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctors_kitchen/ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDHTLhQbYlFnPBv-iLgFsQQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedoctorskitchen/?ref=br_rs Twitter: https://twitter.com/doctors_kitchen?lang=en
